Solar pool heating allows you to go green, save “the green”, and enjoy your sparkling blue swimming pool water all year around. It enables you to save money and save the environment. Experts agree going solar makes more sense, and saves you more money during our sunny Gulf Coast spring, fall and winter than in most other places in the country.

How it works
The solar panels (called collectors) that the warm water for your swimming pool are installed on the roof of your home – out of the way of backyard enjoyment, and in the best location to harness the power of the sun.
- Water is pumped out of the pool, through a pipe, to the solar collector. It passes through, picks up heat and then is returned to your pool (much like a traditional heater).
- The water leaving your pool is strained and filtered before it travels to the collectors. You get cleaner AND warmer pool water!
- A bonus: in our hot Florida summers, you can use your solar pool heating system to actually cool down the water. You simply circulate the water that reached 90°- plus during the day, through the collectors at night, when the panels are cool. As you know, your pool never cools down that much on its own at night.
Why it saves you so much money
Solar pool heating represents “one of the most cost-effective uses of solar energy today”, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE).
- DOE studied annual winter heating costs in Miami, and determined homeowners are paying at least $2136 per year and as much as $3600 to operate a gas pool heater. Remember, Miami is warmer than here, so the costs here are somewhat higher. With propane at $3.00 per gallon or more, our estimate is that it can cost as much as $4,000 to keep a 14 x 28 Central Florida pool at 80°F on a year-round basis.
- Erase that annual expense from your costs. DOE says the system will pay for itself. Some homeowners find it took only 1-2 years for utility cost savings to “pay them back” for the cost of installing solar pool heating, depending on whether they use propane or natural gas.
- Plus, gas heaters generally need to be replaced every 5 to 7 years. Solar panels can last 15 years or more.
Why it works so well
Solar energy is considered an “inexhaustible resource”. It’s free, and abundant in our climate. Plus, your solar pool heater works when the sun is covered by clouds. You know you are advised to put on sunscreen even on a cloudy day, because the solar rays penetrate the clouds. Solar pool heating is not only about harnessing actual heat but also collecting solar energy for sustained heating capacity.
- Some homeowners decide to replace the electricity used to operate a solar pool heating pump, and add a solar powered pool pump to their system. Your pump does require electricity, but not anything compared with an electric pool heater.
The move to solar is environmentally conscious. In an age when oil dependency threatens our coast and the earth, using solar power to heat your pool reduces your “carbon footprint”, which means you contribute to pool warming, not global warming.
