The US Department of Energy (DOE) has determined that the cost of a pool solar heater is competitive with both gas and heat pump pool heaters, and in addition has low annual operating costs. Says the DOE:

How a pool solar heater works
We install what are called solar collectors on the roof of your home. They are constantly storing the heat of the sun. On the ground, all you have is a small pump, and filter system. Cold water is pumped from your pool, and through tubes in the collectors, where it gets warm. The warm water is pumped back into your pool.
We should point out that the cold water is strained and filtered before it is sent up to the solar collectors. The water that is returned is not only warmer, but cleaner. In addition, this filtration allows the pipes to last much longer.
In winter the average temperature, for instance in Sarasota, is 62°. Eventually, pool water will approach outside air temperature, if you don’t have a pool solar heater. As you know, a cold snap can rapidly make pool water even colder. After all the summer enjoyment, after all you have invested in outdoor living, why have three or four winter months, and early spring and late fall in which you cannot use your pool because the water is too cold?
